STERILIZATION, PROCESSING & DISTRIBUTION TECHNICIANS

SAN ANTONIO MILITARY MEDICAL CENTER

JBSA-FORT SAM HOUSTON, TX

 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Sterilization Processing Distribution Technicians (SPD Techs) shall provide the services for the San Antonio Military Medical Center, JBSA Fort Sam Houston, TX, to augment or supplement the staffing at Army military treatment facilities (MTFs) to provide services that contribute to a stable workforce providing quality services due to surges in workload, deployments and civilian personnel vacancies.

All services shall be provided in accordance with established standards, principles and ethics of the profession and applicable professional specialty organizations, The Joint Commission (TJC) standards, applicable Department of Defense (DoD) and service specific regulations, directives, and policies, and MTF policies, procedures, and job descriptions. The SPD Techs shall give the highest regard to patient dignity and observe the precepts of the American Hospital Association’s Bill of Rights for Patients and shall provide services in conjunction with other non-contract providers to include physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered and licensed practical nurses, and support personnel. ALL SPD Techs shall perform essentially the same functions, within the scope of acceptable practice, as those required by Army or government service health care professionals of similar experience and in similar duty assignments.

 QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

  • A minimum of one year of experience as a sterile processing and distribution processing or operating room technician.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) from American Heart Association.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or otherwise meet the requirements of AR 25-2.
  • Maintain a positive, helpful demeanor, display courtesy and tact frequently under stressful conditions and duress at an accelerated pace due to life threatening patient situations.
  • Constant standing, walking, lifting, and bending is required.
  • May be exposed to highly contagious/infectious blood borne pathogens and radiation from portable x-ray and continuous fluoroscopy equipment.
  • Shall be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with all patients and other health care providers.
  • Shall possess sufficient initiative, interpersonal relationship skills and social sensitivity such that he/she can relate constructively to a variety of patients from diverse backgrounds.

 HOURS OF PERFORMANCE

The SPD Techs shall provide personnel to support a seven (7) day a week, 24-hour a day operation to include holidays. Furthermore, these areas may also require weekend coverage. Below is an example of the most common shift times which consist of eight (8) work hours with a non-paid 30 minute lunch or dinner break, and a 12 hour shift with a 30 minute non-paid lunch or dinner break. The maximum number of shift hours to be scheduled in a twenty-four hour period is twelve (12).

  • Day (1st) Shift                         0645-1515
  • Evening (2nd) Shift                  1445-2315
  • Night (3rd) Shift                      2245-0715
  • Weekend-1                              0645-1915
  • Weekend-2                              1845-0715

 

The SPD Techs will normally work 32-40 hours per week on rotating shifts Sunday through Saturday, including Federal holidays. Up to 80 hours of overtime may be required per year.

Absences

  • Scheduled Absences shall be scheduled at least thirty (30) days in advance and mutually agreed upon by the Prosthetic Service Chief, Valforce, and COR.
  • Unscheduled Absences shall be called into the worksite supervisor as soon as possible but not later than within the first hour of each duty day they are unable to report to work.

 SPECIFIC TASKS

The SPD Techs shall have sufficient training/experience to be able to adequately perform (to include, but not limited to) the following:

  • The SPD Techs are required to pull S3 Surgical Schedule daily to review projected workload in the operating room.
  • The SPD Techs are required to identify and coordinate medical supplies and equipment to facilitate and enhance the surgical procedures being performed in the operating room.
  • The SPD Techs shall process and sterilize medical equipment and instrumentation sets with documentation in sterilization log book.
  • Assist with decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, sterilization, storage and issuing of medical/surgical instrument sets, instruments and supplies.
  • Provide wards, clinics and other users with sterile supplies and other SPD issued items.
  • Process instrument sets delivered from wards and clinics and reissue them as required.
  • Maintain established supply levels and rotation of supplies.
  • Clean the Sterilization/Processing/Distribution work areas per SPD standard operating procedures.
  • Issue SPD supplies to sections and outpatients and properly complete hand receipts.
  • Check supplies processed in SPD for expiration and proper packaging.
  • Assist with the issuing, exchange and restocking of Crash Carts.
  • Deliver broken medical items to Medical Maintenance.
  • Receive supplies from logistics (100% inventory of supplies).
  • Check medical supplies for serviceability.
  • Assist with function check of sterilization equipment.
  • Fold linen.
  • Issue outpatient medical supplies to patients and properly complete paperwork in the outpatient room.
  • Assemble surgical case carts as directed by the daily operating room schedule or by request from the operating room service.
  • Operate sterilizers, washer/sterilizers, sonic baths, sterrad sterilizers, cart washers and other equipment items crucial to the processing of surgical sets and supplies.
  • Maintain required SPD specific documentation to include sterilizer logs, equipment issue logs, case cart and crash cart documentation.
  • Assemble case carts with surgical instrumentation and supplies for operating room and clinic use.
